Silicone or polysiloxane is a polymer made by repeating silicon and oxygen chains. These synthetic polymers, like siloxanes, which are composed of silicon, oxygen, carbon, and hydrogen atoms, are made of innocuous compounds.
Silicones are used in sealants, adhesives, lubricants, medications, kitchenware, thermal insulation, and electrical insulation. Oil, silicone grease, silicone rubber, silicone resin, and silicone caulk are the most common varieties of silicones.
The process begins by heating a substantial volume of quartz sand to temperatures as high as 1800 degrees Celsius in order to extract silicon from silica.
The resulting powder is heated and combined with methyl chloride to produce silicone. When the two components are heated together, they react to form methyl chlorosilane, a mixture of many different substances, the most important of which is dimethyldichlorosilane because it is the primary silicone component.
By breaking down methyl chlorosilane into its constituent elements and turning each one into silicone, dimethyldichlorosilane can be created. After distillation, Dimethyldichlorosilane splits into disilanol and hydrochloric acid. The hydrochloric acid acts as a catalyst, turning the disilanol into poly dimethyl siloxane. The siloxane bond, the cornerstone of silicone, is present in poly dimethyl siloxane.
The leading silicone-producing countries are China, Russia, Brazil, and Norway
